Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to believe while engaging in reflective and independent thinking.  Critical thinkers identify, analyze and solve problems systematically rather than by intuition or instinct.

Sometimes thinking critically can be a difficult process and you should be aware that this thinking process does not happen all the time. It is most difficult when you are affected by emotions, however learning to improve your critical thinking skills is easier than you think!

The skills you need for critical thinking include:

  • Think about the topic or issue in an objective and critical manner
  • Identify the different arguments there are in relation to a particular issue
  • Evaluate a point of view to determine how strong or valid it is
  • Recognize any weaknesses or negative points that there are in the evidence or argument
  • Notice what implicates there might be behind a statement or argument
  • Provide structured reasoning and support for an argument that you wish to make

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.”

-Martin Luther King
